Low Calorie Diets That Boost Longevity

Published:July 25th, 2010

Scientists have been researching the link between low calorie diets and longevity for quite some time. Calorie restriction has been shown to increase the lifespan of non-primate species, from fleas to mice. Diets that are low in protein and fat helped increased the lifespan of animals studied in laboratories.

Protein is an essential component of a healthy diet. However when protein is metabolized by our livers, the waste product that results is urea. If the liver does not function properly, food metabolism is compromised. Kidneys which are responsible for disposing of urea can be start to function poorly and as a result, urea builds up in the bloodstream. The kidney function may be lost by the time people reach 80. A low protein diet can reduce stress on organs such as the liver and the kidneys.

In order to achieve weight loss, sometimes high protein diets are recommended, but prolonged diets of this type can cause metabolic changes leading to bone loss and kidney stones.

British researchers from the Institute of Healthy Ageing at University College London have discovered that a reduction in a specific protein contained in meat, fish and certain nuts can prolong our lives. They said that a vegetarian diet can achieve both increased lifespan and health. They have also claimed that such a diet could reduce the risk of developing heart disease and cancer.

Studies at the molecular level have shown that genes in the sirutin class create enzymes that increase the activity of the mitochondria and slow the aging process of cells. The complex molecular process will continue to be studied and it is hoped that nutritional supplements will be developed to extend lifespan without having to suffer hunger.

Slimming patches are helpful if you are determined to lose weight and find it difficult to cope with all the restrictions of rigorous diets. They can help you by suppressing your appetite and thus you will be able to restrict your protein and caloric intake so that you will lose weight easily.
