Longer And Healthier Life With Restricted Diets

Published:July 13th, 2010

Diets can lead to longer life according to researchers that recently presented their findings at the British Society for Research on Ageing. Scientists at the Centre for Integrated Systems Biology of Ageing and Nutrition at Newcastle University have developed the theory that senescence is the major cause of ageing. Senescence is the state when cells can no longer replicate and the study was aimed at finding out what effect restricted diets have on this process.

It has been known for some time that restricted diets can prolong life but recently more insight has been gained on how such diets can affect the ageing mechanisms and what is more, how they work for people who adopt restricted diets later in their lives. Restricted diets lead to a decrease in the accumulation of senescent cells in the liver and intestines.

Researchers are trying to find ways in which increasing lifespan would also mean increasing healthspan, so that we can benefit from living more but also living healthy and free from serious diseases.
